Approach

We are using as a base the “Lean Data” approach developed by Acumen to monitor and manage our social impact. 

Key Outcomes
We capture the following key outcomes throughout our ventures to both monitor our impact but also to use it as a management tool to  improve our services:

  • Changes in income and quality of life of the farmers and their families
  • Changes in the farmers’ capability/knowhow through training and education
  • Changes in productivity

 

Output parameters
Our ventures collect, monitor and report selected output parameters that are intended to serve as proxies for outcomes:

  • Some examples: number of farmers reached, number of trainings conducted and number of jobs created

MilkLane

Mr. Satyavelu, 43 years old, is an ambitious marginal farmer living in Gudlanayanapalli village, 8 Kms from Kuppam. He and his wife Laghumeshwari have two children. Their son is a 2nd year undergraduate and their daughter is in her last year attending pre-university course. He is happy with MilkLane’s services compared to the previous dairies as he is getting much better prices (INR 28-30 compared to INR 16-18). The pricing method used by his previous dairy collectors was based on the quantity. He has learned through the ML system that the pricing depends upon the milk constituents such as fat and SNF. He also appreciates the timely payments and better transparency in the overall system of ML by which he can reconcile the money received at each cycle with actual receipts generated on a daily basis.

He receives advice from his BCO and the field supervisors about maintaining cattle health, hygiene through use of steel cans instead of plastics, and improved productivity due to quality feed.

Mr. Satyavelu referred to the aspirations of his son to pursue post graduate studies, and his daughter who wants to become a teacher. For him, fulfilling his children’s aspirations has become his own! To achieve this, he is committed to work hard by expanding dairy farming since now he has become confident with the prospects of the dairy business.


FarmLink

Rahul Babhuji Shinde, aged 40 years, is a young progressive and passionate farmer living in the village of Manjarwadi. He has been working with Farmlink (FL) since its inception. Rahul and his wife Mangal have two daughters, Namasvi, 6 years old, and Saavi, 3 years old.  Both girls are attending an Ashram school nearby where he spends nearly INR 60000 a year for providing them education.

Rahul’s family has a total 5 ½ acres of cultivable land and 10 acres of leased land where vegetables farming is the major activity. Their crops include potato, sweet corn, tomato, pomegranate, sugarcane and onions.  He practices all sustainable agriculture methods through soil and water conservation and integrated pest and disease management. He learned this from other progressive farmers and by visiting model farms around the region for the past two decades. Now he has evolved to be a model farmer as several farmers from his village and surroundings visit his farm to learn these practices from him.  He prepares organic pesticides using locally available materials and indigenous practices. He is also providing regular income to 6 farm labourers with decent wages in his farm.

Rahul has supplied nearly 12 MT of onions to FL at a price of INR 23500 per MT which is the highest ever price realised. Another 3 MT of onion in addition to 25 MT of tomato is planned to be delivered to FL. Rahul is happy with his relationship with FL in terms of fair price for his produce and also due to the processes followed.
